Home Lockout Service
You stepped out to grab the recycling bin and the door swung shut behind you. Through the glass you can see your keys hanging on the hook by the stairs, exactly where they always are, and the latch has caught.

Most lockouts end with the original lock still on the door and still working. That is the point of professional entry: picks, tension tools, decoders and latch tools are designed to operate the mechanism the way a key would, without cutting or prying anything. Drilling is reserved for cylinders that will not yield, and when it is the only route the locksmith says so before starting and fits a replacement cylinder in the same visit so you are never left with a hole where a lock used to be. You keep your hardware, your finish and your existing keys whenever the situation allows.
How the visit goesIt is minus fifteen, the wind is coming across the driveway, and the key will only go halfway into the deadbolt. Yesterday's thaw left water in the keyway and overnight it froze solid. Forcing it only makes the metal flex.

How the visit goes

- 1
Confirming you belong at the door
Before any tool comes out, the locksmith confirms that the person asking for entry has the right to it. Photo identification with the address on it is the simplest route. When the card shows an old address, a lease, a property tax notice, a utility bill on your phone or a call to the property manager fills the gap. If everything that proves it is inside, the locksmith notes that and completes the check once the door is open, before leaving. This is a courtesy to every household on the street as much as to you, and good locksmiths treat it as the first step of the job rather than an obstacle.
- 2
Opening a latched knob or lever
When the door has simply latched behind you and the deadbolt was never thrown, the job is often the gentlest one a locksmith does. A spring latch is bevelled so the door can close on it, and without an engaged auxiliary deadlatch that bevel lets a latch tool ease it back without touching the keyed cylinder; a properly engaged deadlatch resists that and needs a different approach. Where the door-frame gap is tight, or a guard plate covers the latch, the locksmith picks the knob cylinder instead, routine work on standard residential hardware. The knob is then checked for a loose spindle or sagging latch, since a door that catches unexpectedly is often telling you the latch is worn.
- 3
A door and frame that line up again
When the lockout traced back to a door that had sagged or swollen, you get more than an open door: the reason is dealt with. Hinge screws that had worked loose are tightened or replaced with longer ones that bite into the framing, the strike plate is adjusted or its pocket deepened so the bolt has room to throw fully, and any weatherstrip that was pushing the door out of square is trimmed. Afterwards the bolt should slide with a fingertip on the thumb-turn and no shoulder on the door. Check it again at the turn of each season, since wood keeps moving with the humidity, and a two-minute screw check saves a return visit.

What affects the quote
- 1
Number of new keys cut
Keys cut on site are counted into the quote individually. Two for a couple, five for a family with teenagers and a dog walker: say how many you want and the total follows.
- 2
Restricted or high-security keyways
Security pins, sidebars and patented keyways take longer to open and, if replaced, cost more as hardware than a standard cylinder. Restricted keys also have to be cut from the system's records rather than duplicated.
- 3
Getting to the door
A ground-floor house door is straightforward. A unit up several flights, a building with a locked lobby and no concierge, or a gated property where the gate is also locked adds steps that the quote takes into account.
Same fees day, night or weekend.
Home Lockout Service: questions
My lock is a high-security model. Can it still be opened?
Yes. High-security cylinders with security pins, sidebars or restricted keyways are designed to slow an intruder, and they do slow a locksmith too, but they open with the right technique, a decoder made for that keyway, or as a last resort a precise drill through the cylinder followed by a like-for-like replacement. Bring any key card or code card that came with the lock, since restricted keys are cut from those records rather than copied.
If my key is lost, will I leave with a working key?
Yes, one way or another. If you choose to rekey, the cylinder is set to a new combination and fresh keys are cut for it on the spot, usually two or three, and tested in each door they should open. If you prefer to keep the existing pinning, a new key can be cut to the lock's code or by decoding the cylinder. Either way you are not left relying on a key that is somewhere else.
Should I try to get in myself before calling?
By all means check the easy things: another door, a family member with a spare, a neighbour holding a key. Beyond that, it pays to wait. Credit cards bend latches, screwdrivers scar cylinders, and a forced window costs far more than a lockout visit and leaves the house less secure. A locksmith arrives with tools shaped for the exact hardware on your door, and an undisturbed lock is the easiest kind to open cleanly.

What the census means at the door
38%
Homes of every age. About 38% of homes in Mississauga were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
In neighbourhoods with a mix of older and newer homes, the finishes on the doors vary widely: aged brass, satin nickel, matte black. A locksmith serving such an area keeps a range of finishes so replacement hardware suits each house.
37%
Single-detached houses make up about 37% of homes in Mississauga (2021 Census).
Where housing is mostly apartments and condos, mailbox locks are a regular call. A worn or lost mailbox key is a small job that a locksmith handles alongside the suite door, and the new lock comes with fresh keys cut on the spot.
